Why Deck & Fence Need Special Treatment

Outdoor Wood Lives a Hard Life

Snow, rain, UV, humidity, foot traffic, BBQ grease, kids, pets. Your deck and fence take more abuse than every other surface combined.

Pressure Wash First

Every deck and fence job starts with a thorough power wash. Removes dirt, mildew, loose stain, and grey weathered wood fibres. Without this, new stain won’t penetrate.

24-48 Hours to Dry

After washing, wood needs 1–2 days to dry completely before stain. We schedule deck jobs as 2 visits (wash day + stain day) to do this right.

Right Coating Per Surface

Pressure-treated wood, cedar, and tropical hardwoods each need different stain chemistry. We’ll recommend the right product based on what you have.

UV + Mildew Resistance

Premium deck stains have UV blockers (prevent grey fading) and mildewcides (prevent green/black mould). Bargain stain at Home Depot lacks both — it’ll look great year 1, peel by year 2.

Light Repair Included

Loose deck boards, popped nails, broken fence pickets — we can replace up to a handful as part of the project. For major rebuilds, see our deck repair page.

Weather-Window Planning

No staining if rain is forecast within 24 hours. We watch the weather and reschedule if needed. Better to delay one day than have stain washed off overnight.

Decks, Fences, Pergolas & More

Every Outdoor Wood Surface

From small balcony decks to full backyard projects.

Pressure-Treated Decks

Most common Toronto deck wood (the green-tinted lumber). Needs 6–12 months to dry before first stain on a new build. Restains every 2–3 years.

Cedar Decks

Naturally rot-resistant, beautiful golden-red colour. Without stain it turns silver-grey. Stains beautifully with semi-transparent finish that shows the grain.

Wood Fences

Cedar pickets, pressure-treated panels, board-on-board fences. Stained, painted (solid colour), or natural with sealer.

Pergolas & Trellises

Outdoor structures often forgotten in deck refreshes. We stain to match the deck below for a cohesive backyard look.

Composite vs. Wood

Composite decking (Trex, etc.) cannot be stained. If you have composite, we can’t help — it's a synthetic surface. Composite cleaning and minor refresh might be available.

Garden Sheds & Outdoor Furniture

Backyard sheds, Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, planter boxes. Smaller projects often bundled with main deck or fence work.

Painting FAQ

Common Questions

When is the best time to stain a deck or fence in Toronto?
Late spring through early fall (May to September) is ideal — warm, dry, and stable weather. We avoid early spring (still cold and damp) and late fall (frost risk). Best long weekend prep window: book us in May or June to have everything ready before summer hosting season.
How long does deck staining take?
For a typical ~250 sqft backyard deck: 2 visits over 2–3 days. Day 1: power wash (~2 hours), then 24–48 hours to dry. Day 2: stain (~3–5 hours), 24 hours to fully cure before light foot traffic, 72 hours before furniture goes back.
Stain or solid colour — which is better?
Semi-transparent stain shows the wood grain, looks more natural, needs reapplication every 2–3 years. Solid stain or paint covers wood completely, lasts 5–7 years, but eventually peels (can’t go back to natural). Most Toronto homeowners pick semi-transparent for decks, solid for fences.
Can you paint composite decking (Trex)?
No — composite cannot be stained or painted in the traditional sense. It’s a synthetic material designed to be maintenance-free. If your composite is faded or stained, we can clean it but can’t recoat it. Wood decks are the only ones that take stain.
How long should I wait before staining a new deck?
6–12 months for pressure-treated lumber. New PT wood is wet from preservative treatment and won’t accept stain properly for several months. Cedar can be stained sooner (3–6 months). We’ll do a moisture test if you’re unsure.
Do you replace broken deck boards or fence pickets?
Yes — minor repairs included. Up to 5–10 boards or pickets can be replaced as part of the staining project (you supply matching wood). For major repairs (rotten posts, structural damage), we’ll quote that separately or refer to our deck installation page.
What stain brand do you recommend?
Benjamin Moore Arborcoat (semi-transparent or solid), Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck, or Cabot Australian Timber Oil. All have UV blockers and mildewcides. Avoid Thompson’s WaterSeal — it’s a sealer not a stain, looks great for a season then disappears.
Can you do staining in the rain?
No. Stain needs 24 hours of dry weather to cure. We won’t start if rain is in the forecast within 24 hours. If a surprise storm hits after we’ve stained, we’ll come back to touch up areas that washed out — no extra charge.
Will the stain match my house?
We bring sample swatches and can show you stain colour on a hidden spot before committing. Note: stain colour looks different wet vs. dry and different on aged wood vs. new wood. We always do a small test patch before the full job.
How often do I need to re-stain?
Decks: every 2–3 years (foot traffic and weather wear). Fences: every 3–5 years (less wear). Solid stain lasts longer than semi-transparent. We can do quick touch-ups in between full re-stains if you notice grey patches.
