Why Licensed Electrical Matters

Bad Electrical Work Causes Fires

In Canada, electrical fires cause hundreds of millions in damage every year — most from unlicensed work. ESA-licensed electricians follow the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

ESA Inspection Passes

All permit-required work inspected by ESA. If our work doesn’t pass, we redo it at our cost — not on yours.

OESC Code Compliant

Ontario Electrical Safety Code is the law. We use the right wire gauge, proper grounding, AFCI/GFCI where required, tamper-resistant outlets in living spaces. No shortcuts.

Insurance Stays Valid

Unlicensed electrical work voids home insurance if a fire results. ESA permits document the work was done to code — protecting you for resale and claims.

Power Off, Tested, Verified

We turn off the breaker, then test with a non-contact voltage tester to confirm dead. Every time, no exceptions. Wire colour identification doesn’t replace testing.

Diagnosis Before Repair

Flickering lights, dead outlets, breaker trips — many causes. We diagnose root cause (overloaded circuit, loose connection, failing breaker) before quoting the repair.

EV Charger + Smart-Home Ready

Level 2 EV charger installations (Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint), smart panels (Span, Lumin), whole-home surge protection. Modern home electrical for modern life.

Painting FAQ

Common Questions

Are you really ESA-licensed electricians?
Yes. We have ECRA/ESA-licensed electricians on our team. ESA is the Electrical Safety Authority of Ontario. Our master electrician’s license is on file and can be verified at esasafe.com. Ask to see the card — legitimate electricians are proud to show it.
Do I need a permit for electrical work?
Most electrical work in Ontario beyond simple fixture/outlet swaps requires an ESA Notification of Work and inspection. We pull this for you. Work that doesn’t need a permit: like-for-like fixture swaps, outlet/switch replacements on existing wiring. Everything else: permit required.
How much does a 100A to 200A panel upgrade cost?
Typically $2,800-$4,500 in the GTA. Variables: distance from meter to panel, whether the meter mast needs replacement, sub-panel needs, condition of existing wiring. Cost includes: new panel, breakers, meter base, mast head, permit, ESA inspection. Sometimes utility coordination is needed for service disconnection.
Can you install an EV charger at my home?
Yes — Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Wallbox, JuiceBox, Enel X. Typical install $800-$1,800 depending on distance from panel to charger location, whether sub-panel is needed, and breaker size (40A vs 50A). Permit-required — we handle it.
Why are my breakers tripping?
Common causes: overloaded circuit (too many devices on one breaker), short circuit (hot wire touching neutral/ground), ground fault (current leaking to ground, common with appliances near water), or failing breaker itself. We diagnose with a meter, not by guessing. Repair quoted based on cause.
Should I upgrade my home from 100A to 200A?
Worth it if: your panel is full and you want to add circuits, you’re planning an EV charger or hot tub, you’re selling and want to remove a buyer objection, or your panel is older than 30 years. Not necessary if: your existing panel has open spots and you have no major plans. We’ll give you honest advice based on inspection.
Do you do knob-and-tube replacement?
Yes — knob-and-tube wiring is found in pre-1950 Toronto homes. Insurance companies often refuse to cover homes with active K&T. Replacement is invasive (open walls or fish wires through) but often required for refinancing or sale. Quoted custom after inspection.
Can you install whole-home surge protection?
Yes — whole-home surge protectors mount at the main panel and protect everything downstream from voltage spikes (lightning, utility surges). ~$400-$700 installed. Especially important for homes with sensitive electronics, EV chargers, or solar.
What about aluminum wiring?
Aluminum wiring (common in 1965-1975 Toronto homes) has higher fire risk than copper. Options: pigtailing (joining short copper sections at every connection, $400-$800 typical), full replacement with copper (~$8,000-$15,000 for whole home). We’ll inspect and recommend.
Do you do generator hookups for backup power?
Yes — portable generator inlet boxes ($600-$1,200) or whole-home automatic transfer switches with standby generators (~$8,000-$15,000 including the generator). Permit-required, code-compliant.
