Why It Matters

What Makes a Good Patio?

Patio install is 80% prep work. Cheap patios fail fast in Toronto freeze-thaw cycles. Here's what separates a 25-year patio from a 5-year disaster.

Proper base depth

6+ inches of crushed gravel base is non-negotiable. Skipping this means patio shifts and sinks within 2-3 winters. We never compromise on base prep.

Slope for drainage

Patios slope away from the house at 1-2%. Without proper slope, water pools, freezes, and lifts the pavers. Foundation protection too.

Polymeric sand in joints

Polymeric sand hardens to seal joints, prevent weeds, prevent ant infestation. Cheap regular sand washes out within a single season.

Edge restraint

Plastic or metal edge restraint prevents pavers from spreading. Without it, edges shift and the whole patio fails over time.

How It Works

Our 5-Step Patio Installation Process

1

Free Consult

We measure your space, discuss layout and materials, 3D rendering for larger patios. Written quote within 48 hours.

2

Excavate & Base

6-8" excavation. Geotextile fabric to prevent settling. 6"+ crushed gravel base, compacted in lifts.

3

Bedding Layer

1" of polymeric sand or fine gravel, screeded perfectly flat. Foundation of every paver patio.

4

Lay Pavers / Pour Concrete

Pavers laid in chosen pattern with proper joint spacing. Edge restraint installed. Or concrete poured and stamped.

5

Joint Sand & Seal

Polymeric sand swept into joints, activated with water to harden. Concrete sealed. Final cleanup.

FAQs

Common Questions

How much does a patio cost in Toronto?
Standard interlock: $25-$40/sqft installed. Premium interlock or stamped concrete: $40-$65/sqft. Natural stone or multi-level custom: $65-$120+/sqft. A standard 300 sqft backyard patio runs $7,500-$25,000 depending on material choice.
How long does patio installation take?
Small patio (under 200 sqft): 5-7 days. Standard backyard (300-500 sqft): 1-2 weeks. Large or custom multi-level: 2-3 weeks. Weather-dependent — we wait for good days for concrete pours and avoid working in heavy rain.
Do I need a permit for a patio?
Usually not in Toronto for ground-level patios under 30" high. Raised patios, decks attached to your home, or very large patios may need a permit. We check Toronto bylaws and handle any required permits as part of the project.
When's the best time of year for patio installation?
April-October is best. May-June and September-October are ideal weather. We book 2-4 weeks ahead during peak season. Avoid late November-March (frozen ground prevents proper base prep and freezing temperatures harm fresh concrete).
Interlock vs. concrete — which is better?
Interlock: Repairable (replace damaged pavers individually), more design options, no cracking, 25+ year lifespan. Concrete: Lower cost, fewer joints, can crack with freeze-thaw, lasts 20-30 years. Both excellent if properly installed with proper base.
How important is the base?
Critical — 80% of patio failures are base failures. 6" of compacted crushed gravel is the minimum standard. Skipping this means shifting, sinking, and uneven pavers within 2-3 winters. We never compromise on base prep, even on smaller jobs.
Do you handle drainage?
Yes — drainage is built into every patio. Proper slope (1-2% away from house) plus gravel base means water drains naturally. For low-lying yards or pool decks, we add French drains, drain tiles, or catch basins as needed.
Will my patio crack or settle?
Concrete patios can develop small hairline cracks over 5-10 years from freeze-thaw cycles (we use control joints to direct cracking). Interlock patios shouldn't shift if properly installed — that's the 10-year workmanship warranty. Pavers can be individually replaced if damaged.
Can you do walkways and a patio together?
Yes — coordinated install is often cheaper than separate projects. Same materials and pattern create a unified look across the property. Common combination: front walkway + back patio + garden path, all in one visit.
Do you do patios with fire pits or built-in seating?
Yes — integrated features add character and resale value. Stone fire pits, built-in seat walls, pergolas, outdoor kitchens. Quoted separately or combined with patio. See our outdoor service page for full backyard transformations.
