Why Outdoor Work Has Its Own Rules

Outdoor Wood Lives a Hard Life

Snow, ice, rain, UV, humidity, freeze-thaw. Outdoor structures take more abuse than every other surface combined — built right or rebuilt in 5 years.

Permits Where Required

Most Toronto decks over 24" off grade need a building permit. Fences over 8 ft need one. Pergolas attached to the house often need one. We handle the paperwork and inspections.

Proper Footings

Concrete footings below frost line (4 ft minimum in Toronto), Sonotubes, post-base anchors. Skimping on footings is why decks heave and warp after the first winter.

Pressure-Treated + Cedar

PT lumber for structural members (joists, beams, posts). Cedar or composite for visible decking and railing. Right material for each job — not cheapest for everything.

Weather-Window Scheduling

We don’t build in heavy rain or sub-zero weather. Frozen concrete doesn’t cure. Wet wood traps moisture. We schedule around weather and reschedule when needed.

Code Compliance

Ontario Building Code: railing heights, baluster spacing, stair rise/run, footing depths. Inspectors check all of this — we build to pass first time.

Honest About Composite

Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech) costs 2-3x more than PT but lasts 25+ years with zero maintenance. Real wood needs re-staining every 2-3 years. We’ll explain the math.

Painting FAQ

Common Questions

When is the best time to start an outdoor project?
Late April through October is the building season. Frozen ground means we can’t pour footings (concrete won’t cure properly below 5°C). Book in February-March for spring start — our schedule fills up fast. Honest tip: early-season starts (May) have more weather risk; mid-season (June-August) is most reliable.
Do I need a permit for a deck?
Toronto: deck over 24" off grade requires a permit. Deck attached to house always requires a permit. Detached low decks under 24" usually exempt. Each municipality varies slightly (Vaughan, Mississauga, Markham have their own rules). We’ll confirm during assessment and handle paperwork.
Pressure-treated vs. cedar vs. composite — how to choose?
Pressure-treated (PT): cheapest, structural-grade, green-tinted, lasts ~15-20 years, needs staining. Cedar: naturally rot-resistant, beautiful, mid-priced, lasts ~20-25 years, needs occasional stain or weathers grey. Composite (Trex, TimberTech): highest upfront cost, no staining ever, lasts 25-30+ years, 100% maintenance-free. We use PT for structural members (joists, beams) and cedar or composite for visible surfaces.
How long does a deck build take?
Standard 300-400 sqft deck: 1.5-2.5 weeks (weather-permitting). Large multi-level deck: 3-4 weeks. Steps: permit (1-2 weeks before start), footings (cure 24-48 hours), framing, decking, railings, finishing. Rain or freeze can extend timeline — we’ll communicate in real time.
Can you build in winter?
Generally no for new builds — frozen ground prevents footings, frozen wood doesn’t take screws cleanly, weather is unsafe for crews. Exception: indoor work like sheds with existing slab, or small repairs. Winter is good for design + permit prep so you’re ready for spring start.
Do you do composite decking installation?
Yes — Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Azek are the brands we install most. Composite is more forgiving (no warping, no splinters, no annual staining). Slightly different fastening technique (hidden clips). ~30-50% higher install cost than PT, but zero maintenance for 25+ years.
Can you fix my old deck instead of replacing it?
Often yes — depends on structural condition. If joists and posts are solid (no rot), we can replace damaged decking and railings while keeping the substructure. If the substructure is rotted, you’re usually better off rebuilding. We'll inspect and tell you honestly.
Do you do fence installations in winter?
Limited. Frozen ground makes post-hole digging impossible without specialized tools. We can sometimes install over existing fence post locations or use surface-mount post bases. Most fence work scheduled April-November.
Will you remove and dispose of my old deck/fence?
Yes — demo and disposal included in most quotes. PT and cedar disposed at construction waste facilities. Composite recycled where possible. Cost varies by volume — typically $500-$2,000 for medium projects.
Can you build outdoor kitchens?
Yes — full outdoor kitchen builds including BBQ surrounds, cabinetry, countertops, gas line extensions (TSSA-licensed gas tech), electrical (ESA-licensed electrician), plumbing rough-in for outdoor sinks, and weather-protected lighting. $15,000-$60,000+ depending on scope.
