Drywall Done Right Lasts Decades

Why It's Worth Hiring a Specialist

Drywall is one of those jobs where every shortcut shows up later — visible seams, cracks, screws popping out, wavy walls. We do it right the first time.

Standard 1/2" or 5/8"

1/2" for most walls, 5/8" for ceilings and fire-rated assemblies (e.g. between garage and house, basement furnace rooms). We use the right thickness for code.

Screws, Not Nails

Drywall screws bite into studs and don’t pop out over time the way nails do. We use coarse-thread for wood, fine-thread for metal studs, set just below the surface for clean mudding.

Paper Tape Joints

All seams covered with paper tape embedded in mud. We don’t use cheap mesh tape on flat seams — it’s weaker and shows through paint. Mesh only on corner bead and patches.

Level 4 Finish Standard

3 coats of mud minimum, sanded smooth between coats, primed before paint. This is the industry-standard finish for residential interior walls — flat or eggshell paint shows no defects.

Level 5 for Special Cases

Skim coat over the entire surface for high-gloss paint or rooms with strong raking light (large windows, recessed lighting). Quoted extra — tell us if you need it.

Dust + Site Protection

Floor protection, plastic sheeting between work area and the rest of the house, HEPA vacuums for sanding. Drywall dust is fine and gets everywhere — we contain it.

Half-Wall / Partial Walls

Stub walls, half-height room dividers, knee walls. Custom framing + drywall combo.

Painting FAQ

Common Questions

What's included in a 'full' drywall installation?
Hanging sheets, screwing to studs, taping all seams with paper tape, applying 3 coats of joint compound, sanding between coats, and priming the finished surface. Result: paint-ready walls. Paint is a separate service — see our interior painting page.
What's the difference between Level 4 and Level 5 finish?
Level 4 (standard): smooth mudded seams, sanded, primed — works for flat/eggshell paint and most rooms. Level 5: entire surface skim-coated with thin mud before primer — needed for high-gloss paint or rooms with strong raking light from large windows or recessed lights. Level 5 costs about 20-30% more.
How long does drywall installation take?
Single room: 3-4 days (hang day, tape + first mud, second/third mud, sand + prime). Basement (~800 sqft): 6-8 days. The slow part is waiting for mud to dry between coats — can't be rushed.
Can you do the framing too, or just the drywall?
We do both. For larger structural framing (load-bearing walls, additions), we'll involve a structural specialist. For interior partition walls, closets, and basement framing, we handle it end-to-end.
Do you remove old drywall first?
Yes if needed. Demo and disposal are quoted separately — older drywall in pre-1990 homes should be tested for asbestos before removal. We'll never tear out potentially-asbestos drywall without test results.
Will you also do the electrical/plumbing work behind the wall?
No — we’re not licensed electricians or plumbers. For new outlets, switches, or plumbing rough-ins, you'd need those done by licensed trades before we close up the wall. We coordinate scheduling so the inspections happen in the right order.
What about the seams between old wall and new drywall?
Carefully feathered with tape and mud, blended with surrounding texture. Done properly, the transition is invisible after paint. Done poorly, you'll see a line forever — this is why specialist work matters.
Do I need a building permit for drywall work?
Usually no for simple replacement. Yes for new walls, structural work, or basement finishing (most Ontario municipalities require permits for basement finishes). We'll let you know what your specific job needs and how to get the permit.
Can you install soundproof drywall?
Yes. Options include resilient channel framing, mass-loaded vinyl barriers, and acoustic drywall (e.g. QuietRock). Tell us what you're trying to block — we'll design the assembly. Sound mitigation is incremental, not absolute.
How much does drywalling a basement cost?
Typical 800-1000 sqft Toronto basement: $3,500-$5,500 for drywall only (framing extra if needed). Bigger basements or higher ceilings cost more. See our pricing tiers above.
