Why Flooring Needs the Right Hands

It's the Prep, Not the Planks

DIY flooring fails for the same reasons every time: uneven subfloors, missing expansion gaps, wrong underlayment. We do the prep that actually matters.

Subfloor Levelling

Most Toronto subfloors aren’t perfectly flat. We check with a level and fill low spots with self-levelling compound before flooring goes down. Skipping this is why DIY floors squeak.

Expansion Gaps

Every flooring product needs an expansion gap around the perimeter (usually 1/4"). Without it, the floor buckles in humid weather. Hidden under baseboards and quarter-round.

Correct Underlayment

Foam, cork, rubber, or attached — each floor type pairs with a specific underlayment. For basements, we use moisture-barrier underlayment. We choose right based on conditions.

Clean Cuts

Around doorways, vents, irregular walls, and stair nosings — this is where amateur jobs look obviously amateur. Sharp tools, careful measuring, scribed cuts.

Transition Strips

Between rooms (hardwood-to-tile, room-to-room), at doorways, against stairs. We install proper transitions — no exposed plank edges.

Quarter-Round & Baseboards

After flooring goes down, we install quarter-round (or replace baseboards if removed for the install). Sealed, caulked, and painted to match.

Flooring Types We Install

Hardwood, Vinyl, Laminate & More

Each floor type has its own technique. We do them all (except site-finished hardwood, which is a specialty trade).

Laminate

Click-lock laminate planks. Budget-friendly, durable, easy to install over most subfloors. Great for bedrooms, basements, rentals. ~$2-$5/sqft material.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP/LVT)

Waterproof, kid-and-pet-friendly, looks like wood. Our most-recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Click-lock or glue-down.

Engineered Hardwood

Real wood top layer over a plywood core. More stable than solid hardwood, can go in basements. Click-lock or nail-down. ~$5-$12/sqft material.

Sheet Vinyl

Roll vinyl glued to subfloor. Cheapest waterproof option — common in laundry rooms, basements, rental units. ~$1-$3/sqft material.

Vinyl Tile (LVT)

Individual vinyl tiles glued down. Versatile patterns, can do herringbone, hex, etc. Often used in entryways, mudrooms.

Painting FAQ

Common Questions

Do you supply the flooring or do I?
Either. Most customers supply their own — you have full control over brand, style, and budget. We can recommend reliable Toronto suppliers (Floor Factor, Royal Wholesale, Home Depot Pro Desk). If you want us to source, we add a small handling fee (max 15%, disclosed).
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Add 10% for waste on straight installs, 15% for diagonal layouts (e.g. herringbone). Keep at least one full box after the install for future repairs — flooring lines get discontinued and exact-match later is nearly impossible.
Can you install over my existing floor?
Sometimes. Vinyl, laminate, and engineered can go over a single layer of vinyl or laminate if it's flat and intact. Cannot go over: thick carpet, soft underlay, multiple existing layers, or damaged subfloor. We'll assess before quoting.
Will I have to leave my house during install?
No — we work room by room. You'll just need the work room cleared of furniture. We can move large items for you (small extra fee). For whole-home installs, plan for a few days of dust and noise.
How long until I can walk on the new floor?
Click-lock floors: immediately after install. Glue-down: 12-24 hours for adhesive to set. Nailed hardwood: walk same day, but no heavy furniture for 24 hours. We'll tell you specifics for your job.
Do you remove and dispose of old flooring?
Yes — quoted separately because volume varies. Carpet/laminate removal: ~$0.50-$1/sqft additional. Tile or glued vinyl is more labour-intensive: ~$1.50-$3/sqft. Disposal fees depend on landfill rates.
Will you reinstall the baseboards or do I need to repaint?
We can do either: (a) remove baseboards before install, reinstall after, touch up paint where needed, or (b) leave baseboards in place and install quarter-round shoe moulding against them. Option (a) looks cleaner; option (b) is faster.
Can you install in basements?
Yes. LVP and engineered are best for basements because they handle moisture better. Laminate works only if the basement is consistently dry. Avoid solid hardwood in basements — it warps with humidity changes.
Do you install hardwood stairs?
Yes — full stair treads and risers, often pairing with a hardwood install on the main floor. Custom nosing, scribed treads to fit existing rough framing. Quoted per stair (typically ~$80-$120 per stair plus materials).
What if my subfloor is uneven?
Common in older Toronto homes. Up to 3/8" variation across 10 feet can be levelled with self-levelling compound (extra cost). Larger variations may need plywood overlay or subfloor repair before flooring.
