DIY flooring fails for the same reasons every time: uneven subfloors, missing expansion gaps, wrong underlayment. We do the prep that actually matters.
Most Toronto subfloors aren’t perfectly flat. We check with a level and fill low spots with self-levelling compound before flooring goes down. Skipping this is why DIY floors squeak.
Every flooring product needs an expansion gap around the perimeter (usually 1/4"). Without it, the floor buckles in humid weather. Hidden under baseboards and quarter-round.
Foam, cork, rubber, or attached — each floor type pairs with a specific underlayment. For basements, we use moisture-barrier underlayment. We choose right based on conditions.
Around doorways, vents, irregular walls, and stair nosings — this is where amateur jobs look obviously amateur. Sharp tools, careful measuring, scribed cuts.
Between rooms (hardwood-to-tile, room-to-room), at doorways, against stairs. We install proper transitions — no exposed plank edges.
After flooring goes down, we install quarter-round (or replace baseboards if removed for the install). Sealed, caulked, and painted to match.
Each floor type has its own technique. We do them all (except site-finished hardwood, which is a specialty trade).
Click-lock laminate planks. Budget-friendly, durable, easy to install over most subfloors. Great for bedrooms, basements, rentals. ~$2-$5/sqft material.
Waterproof, kid-and-pet-friendly, looks like wood. Our most-recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Click-lock or glue-down.
Real wood top layer over a plywood core. More stable than solid hardwood, can go in basements. Click-lock or nail-down. ~$5-$12/sqft material.
Roll vinyl glued to subfloor. Cheapest waterproof option — common in laundry rooms, basements, rental units. ~$1-$3/sqft material.
Individual vinyl tiles glued down. Versatile patterns, can do herringbone, hex, etc. Often used in entryways, mudrooms.
