Why Door Installation Matters

A Crooked Door Is Forever Crooked

Doors are unforgiving. Off by 1/8 inch in any direction and they stick, gap, or swing on their own. We get it right.

Plumb, Level, Square

We check the door frame in 3 dimensions before fastening. Shimmed at every hinge point and along the latch side for perfect alignment.

Proper Shimming

Composite or wood shims at every key point. Cheap installers skip shimming — that's why the door doesn’t close 2 weeks later when the house settles.

Hardware Aligned

Strike plate adjusted so the latch engages cleanly without forcing. You shouldn’t have to slam the door to close it.

Weather Sealing (Exterior)

Foam expanding insulation around the frame, weather stripping around the door, threshold seal at the bottom. Stops drafts, saves heating cost.

Trim Included

After install, we replace the door casing/trim (or install new if it’s a new opening). Caulked, nail-set, and paint-ready.

Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, Emtek — we install all the major brands. Honest advice: avoid the cheapest brand at the big-box store — the latch wears out in 2-3 years.

Storm + Screen Doors

Aluminum or fibreglass storm doors over existing exterior doors. Provides insulation and security.

Hardware Swaps

Common Questions

Pre-hung vs slab door — what's the difference?
Pre-hung: door + frame as one unit, comes with hinges attached. You replace the whole frame — better for old/damaged frames. Slab: just the door panel, you reuse the existing frame and hinges — faster, cheaper, but only works if the existing frame is in good shape. We'll recommend based on your situation.
Can you replace just the door, not the frame?
Yes — that's a slab door swap. ~$150-$220 per door if the existing frame is square and the new door matches the old in size. We’ll need to mortise new hinges and a latch into the new slab.
Do you supply the door or do I?
Your choice. Most customers supply from Home Depot, Lowes, or specialty door stores. We can source if you prefer — small handling fee. Honest tip: avoid the cheapest big-box doors — they warp within 1-2 years.
Do you fix sticky doors?
Yes — common problem in older Toronto homes with humidity changes. We adjust hinges, plane the edge that’s sticking, or trim the bottom if it’s catching on flooring. Most sticky doors fixed in 20-30 min each.
Can you install a smart lock?
Yes. Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, August, Kwikset Halo — we install all major smart locks. Includes app setup and connection to your Wi-Fi. Programming your home automation (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa) is included.
How long does an exterior door installation take?
Like-for-like swap (no framing changes): 3-4 hours including removing the old door, fitting the new pre-hung frame, weather sealing with foam, installing weather stripping, replacing the threshold, and reinstalling the casing. New opening or non-standard size: quoted custom.
What about barn doors? Can you install them?
Yes — popular for home offices and bathrooms. Barn doors hang on a track mounted to the wall. The track needs to be anchored to studs (or a 2x4 reinforcement strip if studs don’t align). Provides a slim slide that doesn’t need swing clearance.
Will you cut a new opening in a wall for a door?
Possibly — depends on the wall. Non-load-bearing interior walls: yes, after confirming no plumbing/electrical in the path. Load-bearing walls or exterior walls: we’ll involve a structural specialist. Always quoted custom.
Can you weatherproof my existing exterior door?
Yes — new weather stripping + threshold seal + corner caulking can dramatically reduce drafts. Quick visit (~1 hr) that saves heating costs all winter.
What if my floor isn't level?
Common in older homes. We use shims under the frame to level the door regardless of floor unevenness. The door swings square even when the floor isn't. If the gap at the bottom looks wrong, we can install a threshold to hide it.
