Why Drywall Needs a Specialist

It Looks Easy. It's Not.

DIY drywall patches usually announce themselves — lumpy bulges, visible edges, mismatched paint. Proper repair takes the right tools, the right technique, and patience for drying.

Proper Backing

Larger holes need a backer (drywall scrap, mesh, or wood support) so the patch doesn’t flex. We don’t just slap mud over an open hole.

Multiple Coats, Drying Time

Each layer of joint compound needs 8-24 hours to dry before the next. Skipping this gives you cracks within months. Large patches are 2-visit jobs.

Feathered Edges

The trick to invisible repairs is sanding the mud out to feather-thin edges that blend smoothly into the surrounding wall surface.

Prime Before Paint

Fresh mud absorbs paint differently than aged wall. Without primer, you get a visible ‘flash’ spot in the right light. Always primed before paint.

Dust Contained

Sanding drywall creates fine dust that gets everywhere. We mask off doorways, sheet floors and furniture, and vacuum thoroughly when done.

Texture Match

If your wall has texture (orange peel, knockdown), we match it. Smooth walls are simpler. Heavy textures (popcorn ceilings) are quoted custom.

What We Patch

Common Drywall Damage We Fix

From tiny nail holes to door-knob blowouts and water damage. Each type has its own technique.

Small Nail Holes

Filled with quick-dry spackle, sanded smooth, primed, touched-up. Typically 5-10 holes per visit. Bundle multiple rooms to save.

Door Knob Holes

Standard 1.5-2" hole from a slammed door. Drywall plug or mesh patch, mud, sand, prime, paint. ~1-1.5 hours per hole.

Larger Holes (4-12")

Cut clean square, fit a drywall patch with backing strips, mud and tape edges. 2 visits for proper drying. ~$180-$300.

Water Damage Patches

After a fixed leak: cut out damaged section, replace with new drywall, mud and finish. Stain-blocking primer essential to prevent the stain showing through.

Cracks (Settling, Stress)

Hairline cracks at door/window corners are common in Toronto homes. We open the crack, mesh-tape, and feather mud to prevent reappearance.

Popped Tape Seams

Old joint tape lifting off seams (common in older homes). Cut out the bad section, retape, mud, and refinish.

Painting FAQ

Common Questions

How small a drywall repair will you do?
Any size — the $150 minimum applies. Best value is bundling multiple small patches into one visit (e.g. 10 nail holes across 3 rooms). A single tiny hole still costs $150, but 15 holes across the house also costs $150 for the first hour.
Do I need to be home for drywall repair?
Yes, ideally. You let us in, show us the damage, and confirm paint colour. For multi-visit jobs, you only need to be home for arrival/departure — we can leave between coats.
Can you match my existing paint colour?
Yes. Best result: you supply the original paint can (look in the garage or basement). Second best: we take a paint chip to the store for colour matching. Note that even matched paint can look slightly different against aged wall paint — sometimes we recommend repainting the whole wall for a uniform finish.
How long until I can paint the patch?
Joint compound needs 24 hours to dry before sanding, then primer needs 1-2 hours, then paint. Small patches done morning-to-afternoon. Large patches are 2-visit jobs (mud day + paint day).
Do you do textured walls or just smooth?
Both. Smooth walls are easier. Light textures (orange peel, knockdown) we match using texture spray. Popcorn ceilings: we can patch but matching exactly is tricky on older popcorn — we'll be honest if it'll look slightly different.
Will sanding create a lot of dust?
Yes — drywall sanding is dusty. We mask doorways, sheet furniture and floors, and vacuum thoroughly. For large jobs we use dustless sanding (HEPA vacuum attached to the sander) — nearly zero dust.
Can you patch a hole behind tile (bathroom)?
Different process. If tile is intact, we may not need to do drywall work at all. If tile is broken, see our caulking and tile pages. For mixed jobs we coordinate both.
What if there's mould behind the drywall?
We'll stop and tell you. Visible mould needs proper remediation before we patch. For most surface mould (small area, under 10 sqft), we can treat and seal. For larger or hidden mould, we refer to a remediation specialist.
Do you fix ceiling cracks?
Yes. Hairline cracks can often be opened, mesh-taped, and feathered. Persistent cracks may indicate structural settling — we'll flag that if we see it but the repair will still hold for now.
Can you replace large sections of drywall?
Yes — for areas larger than ~4 sqft we may suggest replacing the panel rather than patching. See our drywall installation page for full panel work.
